The Laredo Recreational Port in Santander

The new Port of Laredo on the Cantabrian Sea in the eastern part of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria in Spain is constructed in the municipality of the same name, next to the old port and the town's old quarter.

It is executed under the shelter of a curved breakwater that is just over 700 metres long in the northern zone and protects two basins from wave action, one for recreational vessels and the other for fishing boats.

The contract includes the design, construction and operation during forty years.

A fishing boat basin is constructed over an area of 180,613 square metres, together with a recreational vessel basin with pantalan wharfs and new recreational vessel moorings. This recreational port can hold 857 vessels compared to the 183 existing ones, which are distributed into twelve pantalan wharfs prepared for vessel lengths of 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 18 and 20 metres. It is fitted out with the latest-generation services, such as the 50-tonne Travelift and a 420-vehicle parking lot.

The shelter works infrastructures are made up of a mole and breakwater. The north mole is 750 metres long. The breakwater is the slope type consisting of three alignments: the already existing first one is made up of the old port mole; the second is a large-radius curve along 290 metres; the third and last one is straight and 90 metres long that ends in front of the new breakwater location.

The complexity of these works is revealed in the construction of the circular shelter mole that required cubic blocks of up to 97 tonnes.

A new parking lot is being constructed for 420 vehicles, with an area of 4,652 square metres, together with a technical area that is next to the fishing boat zone occupying an area of 9,729 square metres. This area also includes the buildings for workshop, storage facilities and dry dock.
