Control Tower for the El Dorado Airport

Control Tower and Aeronautical Management Centre for the El Dorado Airport

The El Dorado Airport, located fifteen kilometres from the centre of Bogota, is the largest airport in Columbia.

FCC is constructing the new control tower and the Columbia Aeronautical Management Centre, which will provide a high-level Air Traffic Management System, with the highest and best-equipped tower in the region, together with air traffic control systems that will guarantee the best air navigation service in Latin-America.

The new building and its management centre, with a total constructed area of 16,300 square metres, will enable air traffic to increase, in addition to responding to airport operational growth.

The new control tower will be eighty metres high, with an area exceeding 2,500 square metres and foundations of prefabricated piles.  Its design satisfies the necessary requirements for airport air traffic control, mainly the critical areas, in order to satisfy safety, planning and flexibility as demanded by airspace users. Furthermore, it guarantees maximum airport operational capacity and will update technology to a worldwide cutting-edge standard.

This new control tower has two cabins, one for air traffic control and the other for SDPM platform control, which will ensure 3600 visibility of the airport and the line of sight to each runway threshold.

The management centre is conceived as an independent complex of four buildings that are connected by a distributing element forming a union nexus that also guarantees independence between the various constructed parts.

El Dorado is the airport with the largest cargo volume in Latin-America and the third largest passenger movement with twenty million a year. This project, one of the biggest aeronautical infrastructure works ever awarded by the Columbian Civil Air Traffic Authority, which is responsible for the tender won by FCC, will mean that the country will have a modern complex in accordance with current needs and future challenges for the provision of air traffic services and air navigation over the continent.
